Located on the border of India and Nepal, the Mahakali River is a torrential and voluminous river. Its location has ensured that it remains relatively isolated and this perhaps has been a major factor for it being one of the most productive rivers in North India for the Mahseer. The Kali is a snow fed river, just like most other Himalayan rivers, and originates from rivulets draining glaciers both in India and Nepal. It flows along the Indo-Nepal border and is joined by various tributaries along the way.

Pancheshwar, is the Kali's most famous beat, this is where the Saryu and the Kali converge. Over the years the finest fish have been taken from this beat. Its fame spread in the 60's when some officers from the Indian Armed forces discovered it and found the fishing to be extraordinary.

The Himalayan Outback team helps you in timing this expedition to the runs of the Mahseer. The ideal way to on Mahseer fishing on these large Himalayan rivers is to approach them on a boat. The goal is to spend the maximum time during the expedition efficiently fishing the most lucrative beats. Confluences, where rivulets join the main river, make the ideal locations for taking the Mahseer. The crystal clear rivulets, which run into the main river, provide some good sport on the fly too. There are beats where you'll be able to fish at night; providing you with an unforgettable experience!

Suggested Program

Day 01 :

Fly in to New Delhi International Airport where you will be met and escorted to the Hotel. Transfer later in the evening to the Delhi Railway station where you will board the overnight train to Kathgodam.

Day 02 :

Arrive in Kathgodam with our representative, who will be escorting the team. The train arrives at 0630 hrs this morning. Here you will be met by The Himalayan Outback vehicles. Start driving to the starting point of the fishing trip; this is a spectacular five-hour drive a through beautiful mountainous region.

The drive takes you to an elevation of nine thousand feet, and on a clear day one can see the Nanda Devi Peak, a 25,000+ feet mountain that is surrounded by other beautiful snow capped peaks. The drive goes through some beautiful Himalayan villages, Rhododendron fields and Himalayan Oak forests.

There are plenty of photo opportunities along the way and our convoy of vehicles invariably stops every now and then for anglers to photograph the surroundings. Packed lunch is served on route.

Arrive in Pancheshwar in the afternoon and settle into camp, which is set up on the banks of the river. The staff, including fishing guides, is introduced to the anglers, followed by hot beverages and tent allocation. You can start fishing soon after you are settled in.

Day 03 :

We will fish all day at Pancheshwar, which is considered the most lucrative of all the beats on this river.

Day 04 :

Spend the day fishing some of the other beats upstream of Pancheshwar.

Day 05 :

Depending on how productive the fishing was, we may choose to either stay on at Pancheshwar or begin the float trip today. As we proceed further down river from Pancheshwar we will come across some excellent swims.

Day 06 :

As we drift down river there are an incredible number of fishing possibilities that we explore.

Day 07 :

The plan is flexible, depending on the conditions; we can either continue down river or continue fishing at the same beat.

Day 08 :

Fish some other pristine areas.

Day 09 :

The expedition rafts down to Tanakpur. This is an excellent stretch for white water rafting - the river is beautiful, very wide at places and gorgy too. We float down a 5-kilometer gorge, encountering a number of Class 2 and Class 3 rapids, at regular intervals.

We reach the end of our float trip and drive back to Kathgodam, where you board the same train back to Delhi after dinner. Arrive in Delhi the following morning.

Day 10 :

Arrive in Delhi railway station, in the early hours of the morning with your escort and get transferred to the Hotel. Transfer back to the airport as per your flight schedule during the course of the day.
